yes baby feeding is a minefield! I looked into WAP homemade formula but it was going to be very expensive and a little scary. I definitely think it probably works great but I feel underqualified to know. Anyways I'm on WIC and I need that financial support! I'm weaning them off formula now to cow's milk which is funny because Aellyn hardly ever drinks cow's milk. Sigh. Everything is fraught with danger it seems! :)

Would you ever consider using a homemade WAPF-inspired formula (http://www.westonaprice.org/childrens-health/recipes-for-homemade-baby-formula)? It does include raw cow's milk (good luck with that in OH), which would be tricky - plus, I wonder if it's easier to place trust in a "tested and proven" product (even though it's proving to be poorly tested and unproven) that go so far against the grain. Honestly, baby feeding is one of the scariest parts of motherhood for me, sometimes I feed my kid boxed crap because I know I ate it as a kid and generally turned out OK (versus giving him, say, a home-fermented something that *just might* have dangerous bacteria). Does this make sense?

Comment on Why I Don’t Boycott Nestle by Zoie @ TouchstoneZ

Yes. This is an excellent viewpoint. I do avoid Nestle (and pretty much anything by any company I disagree with as best I can) but I do it in a way that increases my choices elsewhere. For example, I avoid WalMart, but that doesn't mean I go to Target. It means I buy local whenever I can, then from an independent online retailer as close to me as possible, then from Target, then from WalMart. But, usually I just find I can do without the item and use something else.

I think there's a place for a boycott, but it is vital to finish the sentence, "Boycott xyz" with "in favor of thinking creatively about reusing what you have. Then, by buying from these ethical, local, etc retailers that should get our money."

It's all about choice and focusing on abundance instead of punishment and lack. How can our money increase what we want to see more of?
My recent post Letter to Littles: January 2012

I am in total awe of home-schooling mamas! My oldest littlie goes to a Montessori nursery on a part-time basis, but I'm intrigued by the Waldorf philosophy too ~ I'm inspired to look into it further :-)

Get a sodastream! I cured me of my camel ways, and now I drink the plain bubbly water (also known as tickle water in this house) all day long.

I agree, and thank you! I very much had wanted to mention all the benefits of extended BFing and why it was so important to me, etc. However, this was my first time with this RE and right after she found out I was BFing, she said she had a 4 month old and was "done with that" after a few weeks. I don't know what the reasons were, but either way, didn't want her to be on the defensive.

This is amazing, Paige! I am so inspired by your philosophy, and the way you presented it really helped me to grasp what you were talking about. The intersection between the spheres of self, community, and nature in particular really stuck out to me. I had never viewed those areas in this light. I can't wait to follow along and see how your unschooling journey unfolds.

That's great news. I think they just paint such a wide brush about breastfeeding. For them it is "better safe than sorry" but they don't understand the importance of bfing and the effect on the older child. I wish you tons of babydust!
