Vaccinations: NOT Mandatory

I realized I never explained that you can get exemptions for "mandatory" vaccinations for your kids.  All 50 states have some exemption.  Exemptions fall into 3 categories:

Medical - requires doctor exemption based on health.  For example if you are allergic to an ingredient in a vaccine.

Philosophical - any personally held beliefs.

Religious - any religious beliefs.

Each state is different as far as how hard they make it to get an exemption.  In NY I hear that you have to "prove" you belong to a religion with a problem with vax.  Silly if you ask me since religious beliefs are by nature personal and not institutional.  In Ohio it isn't that hard.  In my opinion religious exemption is a little more "safe" in our country (as far as them snatching that right from you).  If you live in Mississippi or West Virginia you are only allowed a medical exemption.  My opinion - move!  :)

Resolutions 2008

I personally love New Year's Resolutions.  As Benjamin Franklin, a great believer in self-improvement, said, "Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man."  I think most people get turned off from resolutions because no one ever tells us how to make one.  Resolutions are different from goals.  Goals are more wide sweeping overall visions of what we want.  Resolutions are very specific choices.  So, for example, "I will lose weight" is not a resolutions - it is a goal.  A resolution would be "I will switch to whole wheat bread."  See? simple and precise.  I tend to be the type of person that becomes paralyzed by what I think needs to be done.  I experience great guilt about the environment, for example, I don't recycle enough, I'm using terrible chemicals, I eat meat, ....*rips hair out* and I can't even find a place to start.   Resolutions help me make small steps toward who I want to be.  I like this time of year for both goals and resolutions.  Before I decide on my resolutions for 2009 I want to look back at my 2008 plan.

So I had two "resolutions":

  1. Stop saying "what?" when I didn't hear something and instead say "excuse me" or "pardon me."   Why?  Well at work at least "what?" sounds less than polite I guess and it had been bothering me.  I did very good on this one! :)

  2. Start brushing my teeth after lunch at work.  This one was inspired by a coworker.  She always brushes her teeth after lunch.  I got as far as buying a toothbrush and toothpaste for the work bathroom.  It was nice to have it there when I needed it but I never did make it a habit after lunch.  This problem is really that I'm kind of a slave to my day instead of being in control of it.  I kind of flit from emergency to emergency.  Time management problem and still not brushing 3 times a day.  :/

I had three goals:

  1. Operation Get Pregnant.  DH and I decided that 2008 was our year - no holds barred baby making (please, not the fun way for us - get your mind out of the gutter!).   We were planning on trying what we could and then moving on to donor sperm and trying that as much as we could afford in 2008.  If we weren't pregnant by tomorrow night we were going to take some time off, enjoy our 10th anniversary (4/1/09) and then decide what to do about adoption.  I think it was great to have a specific timeline on our goal.  It stops the constant wondering when will this end?  Of course you can always move the date out if it doesn't feel right.  We actually went to the REs office to discuss donor insemination.  We had even picked out a few favorite cryobanks and donors.  At our appointment she said "Do you make less than $100,000?"  (answer: hell yeah)  "I think you should try to get this grant."  The rest is history!

  2. Operation Go Green.  This is an ongoing project but this year we wanted to switch to environmentally friendly cleaning products.  We started buying Seventh Generation products.  We really liked them but they are hard to keep up with in hard financial times.  So that seemed to slack off as the year went on.  I have an idea for 2009 but you have to wait to hear it!

  3. Operation Be Less Vain.  Now this one wasn't popular amongst some of my friends because it was took to imply that I thought these things were vain in anyone.  Not true.  For me though I was definitely filling my life with some things that just aren't me.  After 9 years of infertility I don't know you just lose some of yourself in trying not to fall apart.  Plus it ends up being retail therapy and I was spending too much money.  So, this is no comment on anyone else's choices but these are thing things I cut out this year.

    • I started buying shoes for comfort instead of how much they hurt my feet.  Seriously if you wear an 8 and want a bunch of 3" pointy toed killer shoes let me know I'll send them to you.  Now, I should say that I buy shoes at Target and Payless.  If you can afford quality (expensive) shoes then these styles might not be damaging to your feet (even if they do still hurt).  I don't know about Manolos.  But I'll tell you - cheap shoes in that style...you are going to have to pay for that some day.  I'd rather not be crippled.

    • I stopped buying purses and make up.  Having a bad day?  Nothing a lip gloss or purse can't solve!  This year I think I bought 1 purse and 1 laptop bag (at Target so it isn't like I spend hundreds).  And oh the makeup - I own so much makeup it is obscene.  I'm adventurous with color so I'm a huge sucker for new colors.  Plus anything else *new*...warming, cooling, long lasting, moisturizing, new brush, new scent, BRING IT ON!  Whew, ok, getting excited.  Anyways I'm a cosmetics junkie and it needed to stop.  I have to say that I do still buy some make up (have you tried CG new lipmints lip gloss?  It has Crest in it so it is cool and tingly and makes your breath smell good) but I've certainly scaled way back.  Plus I'm wearing less make up.  I still have blonde eyelashes so going makeup free is not on my agenda but ....work in progress.

    • I started choosing a hair cut for convenience instead of "pretty."  January this year I got all my hair cut off to a short style.  DH loves my hair short so that's a bonus but my hair is so thick that choosing to have long hair means choosing to blow dry for 40 minutes in the morning or just pulling it back wet.  I want to have a hair style and look professional but why the heck am I losing that much of my day for it?  I'm the perfect short hair person because my hair is so thick that it just takes no time to do.

So, what did I get out of all of this?  This year all of these things kind of meshed.  In previous years I always say "I want to lose weight."  It is such a negative goal - my self hatred is implicit in the goal.  It doesn't seem to start from a point of self respect.  This year I embraced my more natural self - it isn't like I went all the way crunchy and stopped shaving and grew dreads but I did get back to a more real me.  And then I got pregnant.  I've experienced my body doing this amazing thing and doing it well.  Suddenly my body seems like more than a pretty accessory that I need to beat into shape but a tool I can use to change the world, be healthy, and nurture my child.  I hope that this feeling is lasting.  No more body bashing for me - my body is amazing!

What are your goals/resolutions?

Crash Course at the Birth Center

I wish I had posted on Christmas day because we had a wonderful Christmas.  The last 3 days though I have been so sick.  Nausea and vomiting.  I figured I ate something bad but was still feeling yucky this morning.  We had our normal midwife appt today that took a wrong turn.  My blood pressure was 155/90!  (High blood pressure can be a symptom of pre-eclampsia also called toxemia)  So, she did the non-stress test and I worked on relaxing (sometimes my bp is high when I'm stressed).  When she took it again it was 148/something.  I had to go to the Birth Center for a bunch of blood work and more fetal monitoring.  I was there for 4 hours and during that time my blood pressure went back to normal (112/74) and my blood work all came back good.  The fetal monitor showed a healthy and very active baby!  I don't know what happened today but it scared the crap out of me.  I go back on Wednesday to monitor my blood pressure and in the meantime my bedrest has been stepped up - more rest and lots of lying on my left side (which hurts like hell because of my shoulder injury - ugh).

Vaccinations: The Flu Vax is Modern Snake Oil

I was at the midwife's yesterday (down 2 more lbs.!) and they have a TV looping CNN Health features.  It is nice to have some entertainment in the waiting room but yesterday there was a huge segment about the Flu Vaccine.  A few months ago this wouldn't have phased me.  I had never had a flu shot but *shrug* to each his own was my feeling.  Now that I KNOW better I was shocked at how full of lies this promotion was.

First off, the nasal spray vaccine, FluMist, is a live virus.  You are very likely to get flu-like symptoms from this AND you can shed live virus and infect others.  'Nuff said about that one.

The Flu vaccine shot is completely useless and sold very aggressively through lies and smoke and mirrors by modern snake oil vendors.  Commercials, posters, radio announcements.  We are being played.  We don't believe everything we see on the "ab roller" infomercial but these commercials seem official enough to make us blindly believe it must be important and real.  It is not.  We are being played.  Check out this presentation by the CDC Director of Communications.  This basically amounts to a marketing plan for getting people hooked on the flu vaccine.

These are direct quotes from their “Recipe” that Fosters Influenza Vaccine Interest and Demand (emphasis mine) :

  • "Medical experts and public health authorities publicly (e.g., via media) state concern and alarm (and predict dire outcomes)–and urge influenza vaccination."

  • "Framing of the flu season in terms that motivate behavior (e.g., as “very severe,” “more severe than last or past years,” “deadly”)"

  • "References to, and discussions, of pandemic influenza–along with continued reference to the importance of vaccination."

  • "Vaccination demand, particularly among people who don’t routinely receive an annual influenza vaccination, is related toheightened concern, anxiety, and worry. For example:

    • A perception or sense that many people are falling ill;

    • A perception or sense that many people are experiencing bad illness;

    • A perception or sense of vulnerability to contracting and experiencing bad illness."

  • "Some component of success (i.e., higher demand for influenza vaccine) stems from media stories and information that create motivating (i.e., high) levels of concern and anxiety about influenza."

So this is classical and premeditated fearmongering!  They are trying to make you feel "heightened concern, anxiety, and worry."  How horrible is that?  AND they know it doesn't work based on their "lessons learned";

  • "It’s hard to create motivating levels of concern and anxiety about influenza--and thus interest in influenza vaccination--when:

    • disease severity and impact are in line with people’s/media expectations

    • Perceived or actual vaccine effectiveness doesn’t meet the expectations or standards of those for whom vaccination is recommended (fortunately, evidence of effectiveness helps)"

I love that word, "create."  So they know that they have a hard time creating this panic because the disease is not as bad as they imply and the vaccine is not effective.

The Disease is Not as Bad as They Imply: Flu kills 36,000 a year in the US

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Web site, uses a common strategy to highlight -- really exaggerate -- risk."  This quote is from a Washington Post article about the misleading numbers used to sell the flu vaccine.  The article points out the context of this number:

  1. It includes flu-related deaths.  Thus if someone with a severe illness gets the flu and dies it is called a flu death even if there was a confounding illness.

  2. It doesn't inlcude the context.  36,000 out of what?  The actual numbers show that on average there is a .01% chance of flu related death and if you are under 65 the number is more accurately 1 in 100,000.

  3. 90% of flu-related deaths occur in people over 65 who probably have a confounding illness.

They also supply this graph on the right.  Hmmmm, doesn't look the the vaccination rate make much of a difference does it?  As the article states; "Despite a dramatic increase in vaccination among the elderly, deaths from the flu and pneumonia have hardly budged."

The Vaccine is not Effective:

Many studies have shown that the flu vaccine is ineffective.  It is only targeted to attack 3 strains of the flu that scientists predict, months in advance, will be them most virulent.  The 2008 vaccine was reported to have a 44% success rate.  All studies show that it is minimally effective: "In 2 seasons with suboptimal antigenic match between vaccines and circulating strains, we could not demonstrate VE [vaccine effectiveness] in preventing influenza-related inpatient/ED [emergency room visits] or outpatient visits in children younger than 5 years. Further study is needed during years with good vaccine match (Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med. 2008 Oct;162(10):943-51)."  It also shows little effectiveness in its target audience, the elderly.

"Of the 1,000 people who got the vaccine before November 1, 149 went on to develop influenza-like illness (14.9 percent). Of the 402 people who did not get the vaccine, 68 got an influenza-like illness (16.9 percent), the study said."  Reported CNN in 2004.

If you are still thinking of this shot for yourself or you 6 month old infant as recommended by the CDC don't forget there are side effects to this ineffective vaccine for a non-threatening illness:

"The most common reactions to inactivated flu vaccine are fever, fatigue, painful joints, and headache. The most frequently reported serious reaction, which usually occurs within two weeks of vaccination, is Guillain-Barré syndrome, an immune mediated nerve disorder characterized by muscle weakness, numbness, pain and paralysis that can lead to death."

And I don't just post this to save our children from damage.  My father has been told to get flu shots because he has heart disease and is thus in a risk group.  So, for him, despite that fact that (1) it doesn't work, and (2) influenza is not something to fear, (3) it is linked to Alzheimer's.  "Hugh Fudenberg, MD, an immunogeneticist and biologist with nearly 850 papers published in peer review journals, has reported that if an individual had five consecutive flu shots between 1970 and 1980 (the years studied), his/her chances of getting Alzheimer's Disease is ten times higher than if they had zero, one, or two shots (Dr. Fudenberg's speech at the NVIC International Vaccine Conference, Arlington, VA September, 1997)."

Maybe we are all just being silly residents of the Town of Allopath.

Retail Therapy

Every-time I go to Burlington Coat Factory I think "why don't I shop here more often?"   For some reason I always forget.  They really have great stuff and their prices are out of this world.  And, guess what? They have maternity!  I was just looking because I didn't want to spend money on more maternity clothes.  Well, I found a great dressy top to wear at Christmas for $5.99!  It is a plum color with satin accents and a square neckline.  It is really cute and so cheap!  I also got the most comfortable nursing bra I've found yet for...wait for it...$7.99!  I paid 30 for my other one (DD/E are not cheap).  It was such a great bargain.  Maybe this time I can remember to shop at Burlington more often.

I wrapped all my presents yesterday.  Since we didn't decorate this year (since I'm useless) the packages are a nice punch of chirstmassy.  I'm so looking forward to Christmas Eve and Day.

Image of a Fetus at 32 weeks

I found this pic of what my baby looks like.  Kinda.  This is a BOY...no scrotum or penis for Aellyn.

And, this is an image of how crowded she is and why I can feel her every twitch (and hiccup!)

Cookies and Cigarettes

Yesterday my mom and sister and I baked Christmas cookies!  I absolutely LOVE Christmas and I think baking cookies is a warm hug of christmas spirit!  We made mexican wedding cookies (snowballs), peanut butter blossoms, butter cookies, and my sister's famous chocolate chip cookies.  It was a blast and made much easier with the awesometastic stand mixer mom and dad got me for christmas last year.  We've decided this year to have a christmas brunch and then just graze on cookies, summer sausage, cheese logs, and truffles for the rest of the day instead of making a dinner.  I'm going to try a sausage brunch casserole this year!  I love to cook and bake when I can be creative.  "Making dinner" isn't near as fun as Cooking, kwim?

Ok, cigarettes.  I have to admit I'm posting this conundrum in part to get peoples' opinions but also because I know my cousin (Hi, CJ!) reads this blog and I'm hoping she can understand my reasoning and pass it on to the family.  I grew up in a smoke filled house.  My dad smoked like 2 packs a day.  Everyone I knew smoked cigarettes, we got "smoking section" at restaurants and, besides being in school, I was generally surrounded by cigarette smoke.  I understand that lots of people grew up this way and we all survived, right?  So this leaves people with little compassion sometimes for people who don't want to be around second hand smoke.  But think about how things are these days.  There is no such thing as smoking sections and restaurants, there aren't smoking sections at work anymore.  Even my friends that smoke (tsk tsk) don't do it in the house.  If you don't smoke these days the closest you get to second hand smoke is that smelly coworker that thinks the perfume is masking the stink (dude, it is SO not).

Second hand smoke definitely gives me a contact headache.  Even if no one is smoking in a "smoking" house the smell is so thick that a headache is an assurance.  My husband's father died of lung cancer before he was 40.  There is alot of other types of cancer in DH's family and he is rightly feeling that he is "high risk" and wanting to avoid carcinogens.  I have always just "handled" the smoke since it is only a few times a year at family functions.  Then we got pregnant.  Second hand smoke is very bad for a fetus obviously.  And I certainly don't want it in my newborn's lungs.  But, do I want it anymore in my 3 or 4 year old's lungs?  Probably not.

So here is my problem.  Some of my family get togethers are going to be smoking events (luckily we rent a hall for Thanksgiving and have lots of outdoor activities in the summer).  One of those is Christmas Eve.  I LOVE christmas eve.  I love to see all my cousins and aunts and uncles!  But I really just can't justify exposing my baby to the second hand smoke.  And I KNOW how DH feels about it.  He feels absolutely no way!  I don't have any wind in my sails to argue with him.  I personally miss my family and I worry about my daughter not getting to participate in christmas eve activities too.  :(  But I have to make a decision and we really can't justify that exposure to her nor am I going to argue with my husband about his very real fear of cancer.  And, of course, I don't expect anyone else to change their plans for my (minority) opinion.  We used to have christmas eve out at a restaurant and that was great.  I could also offer my house next year, which I'm thinking about.  Of course, they'll know why I'm doing it and probably won't be happy.  I asked my parents to be honest with why I'm not there.  I don't really want to lie about it.  But I don't want anyone to think I'm doing it in a snotty way either.  I'm not trying to be "high and mighty" - it is just a personal decision not to be around second hand smoke.  We have friends whose homes we don't go to either.  We go out with them but not to their house.

I guess that's the story.  I just want my family to know that I miss them a christmas and my decision is not a comment on their choices.

Our Birth Plan

We've been working on our birth plan.  I didn't include information about induction/augmentation because my primary audience is hospital personnel and not my midwives per se.

Labor

·       I would like to have no restrictions on food or fluids during my labor.

·       I would like the freedom to move around at will.

·       Please do not offer pain medications unless I ask for them.

·       As long as the baby and I are healthy, I prefer to have no time limits on pushing. It's important to me to push instinctively.  I do not want to be told how or when to push.

·       I would like to be encouraged to try various positions for delivery

·       I prefer to have no episiotomy and risk tearing (unless I'm having a medical emergency).

Birth

·       As long as my baby is healthy, I would like my baby placed immediately on my abdomen following the birth.  Please delay all essential routine procedures on my baby until after the bonding and breastfeeding period (i.e., bathing).

·       Please wait for the umbilical cord to stop pulsating before it is clamped.

·       Please allow my partner to cut the umbilical cord.

·       I would prefer for the placenta to be born spontaneously without the use of pitocin, and/or manual extraction.

·       I would like the option of taking home the placenta.

Post Delivery

·       We would like baby check ups to take place in our room.

·       If the baby has any problems, I would like my partner to be present with the baby at all times, if possible.

·       Please do not administer eye drops to my baby.

·       Please do not administer vitamin K to my baby.

·       I prefer any immunizations be postponed to a later time.

o   I am willing to sign a waiver for any of the above items

·      My baby will be exclusively breastfed.

In Case of Emergency

Should I require a Cesarean Section:

·       I would like my husband to be present at all times during the c-section.

·       I would like to have contact with the baby as soon as it is possible in the delivery room.

·       I prefer to have a hand free to touch the baby.

·       Recovery:

o   If my baby is healthy, I would like to hold my baby and nurse it immediately in recovery.

·      I would like to sign any waivers necessary to permit me to be with my baby in recovery.

Informed consent is very important to us.  Please discuss any procedures and medications with us before administration

Vaccinations: DTaP

In my previous posts on vaccinations I covered my concerns with Hep B, polio and to a smaller extent MMR.  In general I believe the following illnesses to be normal parts of childhood that actually improve immune health when acquired naturally and that vaccination is pushing the diseases to older populations (see discussion on chicken pox).

  • Measles

  • Mumps

  • Rubella

  • Pertussis (whooping cough)

  • Varicella (Chicken pox)

  • Influenza

I probably won't talk about these much more because they are in the "duh" category for me.  It is just silly to choose reactive poisons and chemicals in vaccines over non-life threatening illnesses.  If you aren't convinced about the harm of these vaccines read more information about why fighting off infection normally makes kids healthier.

So, that leaves us these "recommended" childhood vaccinations (see the nice printable list of recommended poisons and toxins here):

These are the disease/vaccines I want to cover because they are "scary" as opposed to the benign disease listed in the first section.

Let's start with DTaP:

DTaP is a combination vaccine that includes diptheria, tetanus, and whooping cough (pertussis, the "a" is for acellular - for some truly frightening reading look up DTP and the injuries it produced before the acellular vaccine was recommended).  Let's take them one by one.

Pertussis

As mentioned, this is a normal childhood disease so I'm not going to spend much time on it except to say two things:  (1) the chance of death from whooping cough with medical treatment is .2%, and (2) vaccination is shown to increase, by more than double, the rate of childhood asthma.

Tetanus

Tetanus is a bacterium whose spores are found in soil.  Thus it is everywhere and you cannot 'catch' it from someone.  In anaerobic (no oxygen) environments it creates a toxoid that is poisonous and can cause nerve damage.  Tetanus is a big problem in 3rd world countries without good sanitation and access to medical facilities.  In the US good wound management makes it very rare.  Since tetanus is anaerobic it grows in deep and dirty wounds - often puncture or crush wounds (hence the "rusty nail" fear).  In the US if a child has a puncture of crush wound, hopefully they are going to the emergency room.  In any ER a person can be given a Tetanus Immunoglogulin (TIG) dose of antibodies to stop the spread of infection.  Since tetanus takes 3-21 days to evolve it can be almost completely avoided by immediate medical care.

Does it sound like I'm playing with fire?  How about this.  From 1980 until today the average number of tetanus cases in the US per year was 40.  Yeah, just 40 - I'm not missing any zeros there.  And most of those were in persons over 40 (and frequently over 60 since nursing homes are a major hotbed for tetanus due to dirty conditions and bedsores) and IV drug users.  Also, cases of tetanus in children under 5 years of age totaled 2 since 1989.  Yeah, 2 in almost 20 years.  All of this information is directly from the horses (CDC's) mouth.

Diptheria

Diptheria is also a toxin producing bacterium.  This is all numbers:  In the 1920s 100 people per 100,000 got diptheria in the US, of these 5-10% were fatal cases.  Since 1980 there are .001 cases per 100,000 and no reported deaths.  It is endemic in developing countries (hygiene, clean water, etc. could this be why?) despite vaccination efforts.  A diptheria anti-toxin is available from the CDC.

Side Effects of DTaP

DTaP has the usual list of yucky side effects as I've posted before.  You can search for one of the name brands to read the package insert.  One of the startling things to me is that DTaP is often THE cause of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome):

"more than two-thirds [of studied SIDS deaths] had been vaccinated with DPT prior to death. Of these, 6.5 percent died within 12 hours of vaccination; 13 percent within 24 hours; 26 percent within three days; and 37, 61, and 70 percent within one, two, and three weeks, respectively."

Diptheria-pertussis-tetanus (DPT) immunization: A potential cause of the sudden infant deathWC Torch - Neurology, 1982

Of course, these studies only prove "temporal" and not "causal" relationships.  You already know how I feel about that.

Vaccinations: Poem

Ode to National Infant Immunization Week:   Stick It

I actually don’t mind green eggs and ham.
It’s vaccines I don’t like, Uncle Sam.

Too many children have paid the price
for harmful and deceptive immunization advice.

There is more to health than preventing infections
with dozens of toxic and dangerous injections.

You purposefully ignore all of the parents’ cries
that autism, asthma and diabetes continue to rise.

Since the word “safe” implies “free from harm”,
I’ll choose what’s injected into my child’s arm.

I do not want them up my nose,
or spliced into my potatoes.

I will not drink them in a glass.
I will not let you stick my @$$.

I do not want them for any reason
not even in your “worst” flu season.

For decades now you’ve been trying to hide,
the dangers of mercury and formaldehyde.

You won’t do the research to try to explain
why vaccines sometime ruin a developing brain.

Yet you tell us to just say no to drugs,
but if we question a shot you act like thugs.

Are injected monkey and fetal cells really healthy?
Or are they part of the scam that makes drug companies wealthy?

When you ‘all lay down tonight to say your prayers,
please include all the vaccine victims listed in VAERs.

Found a Pediatrician!

Yesterday was such a good day!  We had an appointment in the morning with Dr. Lavin of Advanced Pediatrics in Beachwood, Ohio.  He was wonderful and our search is finally over!  I told him my primary concern was having a doctor who was willing to work with us even if we didn't vaccinate.  He at first talked about MMR and autism (which I'm realizing most people see as the "reason" people don't vax).  His studies, which he had typed up into a report, show that autism is completely out of hand but NOT being caused by the MMR vaccine.  He cited a Denmark study, I'll try to find it.  However, I told him that the MMR/autism link was not my reason for not vaxing but that I honestly believe people *should* get measles, mumps, and rubella.  He agreed.  We talked about Chicken pox and how we were throwing nature out of balance with the vaccine.  He agreed.  I said my infant does not need Hep B.  He agreed.  Overall it was a great conversation.  He said he tries not to be a slave to a certain ideology and that his job was to give me information so that I could do my job of making the best decisions for my daughter!  We also talked about our IVF experience and he totally "got" it.  This is important to me.  When I tell someone that it took us 9 years to get where we are I want them to see how that might effect our decisions.  He acknowledged how special our little girl was going to be!

And boy is she special.  We got to see her again at our ultrasound yesterday afternoon.  We got to see her face and her little hands.  She had a full bladder and then she peed and we saw it!  It was so cute!  LOL.  I'll post pics as soon as I can scan them.  I also had a non-stress test which I'll get every week from now on.  I think that is overkill for gestational diabetes but I'm playing nice so I can stay with the midwives.  Baby is firmly head down but her legs are all bent up so I'm not getting rib kicks at all.  Of course I can't breathe at all.  I have to lean my seat back in the car to be able to breathe!  8 more weeks!  She said they don't like to let GD patients go past their due date.  I've decided not to argue now, we'll see how it goes.  If it comes down to induction I'll take in some studies about the lack of improved outcomes with induction for GD and plead my case then.  I feel like I am walking a tight line between being the pushy patient and staying with the midwives.  I DO NOT WANT THE OBs TO DELIVER MY BABY!  That is goal #1.  Goal #2 is anything relating to Aellyn after she's born - no vit K, no eye drops, no hepB vaccine, etc.  So I'm convincing myself that my "birth experience" take the #3 slot.  I need to let some of that go and focus on what really matters.

I got tagged by Wishing for One!  I love getting tagged and I'll work on that next.

Vaccinations: Junkies and Hookers in Diapers

My past vaccine posts have been long (sorry) and time consuming for me because I try to have references and data.  For this one, I want to just appeal to your basic logic.  That doesn't mean that there aren't numbers and research behind this one too...look it up!

Hepatitis B is the first vaccination the CDC wants you to give your baby...at 12 hours old.  Yes, I said hours.  Wow, this must be an important one!  A terrible disease in infants killing by the tens of thousands!

Nope.  Actually Hep B is a blood borne illness passed primarily through high-risk sexual behaviors and sharing dirty needles.  The largest risk to infants is catching it from mom.  Mom's that are Hep B+ (and they would know since STD testing during pregnancy is routine) then maybe you need this vaccine.  Otherwise you only need this vaccine if:

  1. You are an aspiring crack whore*

  2. You love the smack

  3. You plan on pimping out your new infant (hey, the economy sucks, right?)

  4. You firmly believe in hiring drug addicts as babysitters

  5. You believe that babies learn reflexes best when dodging dirty hypodermic needles

Vaccinations: Polio Paralyzes Kids

"If you get polio you will be paralyzed."

Someone said this to me tonight.  This isn't an ignorant person and they weren't trying to convince me that this statement is true.  As with most people we have been convinced of 2 things:  (1) that polio was miraculously cured by a vaccine, and (2) before the vaccine, polio was a horrible epidemic of nature that nearly always meant paralyzation.  This (along with smallpox) is often touted as the star attraction in the Hall of Fame of Why Vaccines Are Your Friends.  So, is it true?  If we stop vaccinating against polio will children once again be in iron lungs and leg braces?

Let's look at both premises on which we base our fear of Polio.

(1) Polio was miraculously cured by a vaccine.

picture-55The chart on the left shows the CDC's information on the Polio Disease and Vaccination from the CDC Pink Book on Vaccine Preventable Diseases.  As you can see from this chart the vaccine has saved us! Look at all those cases!  Look how modern medicine erradicated this terrible epidemic from the American Landscape!

Excuse me while I barf.

(You will really be sick if you click on the link above and read that 95% of polio cases since 1980 were categorized as VAPP - Vaccine Associated Paralytic Polio.  This was with the Oral Polio Vaccine that my mother's generation were given in school.  Now we use Inactivated Polio Vaccine which is an injection.  But remember, vaccines are safe.  But I digress.)

Is the CDC giving us the whole picture?  Let's look at where polio was before 1950 since we can assume it didn't appear out of thin air on January 1, 1950.

us-poliorates-1912-19701The above graph lets us look back to 1912.  As you can see, the disease had two peaks one in 1916 and another between 1945 and 1955.  This graph certainly shows that the disease rate went down after the vaccine but what had made it go up so much in the years prior to the vaccine?  Hmmm...doesn't that coincide in some way with WWI and WWII?  What else was going on that would bring on disease?

A doctor named Biskind heretically postulated a different cause.  The following chart show's polio cases with timing of organochlorine pesticide use (DDT, PCB, etc.) - click on the chart to enlarge.pol12-702

Strangely enough, Biskind pointed out that what this study confirms  (Physiological Investigations Into The Action Of DDT, G.W. Van Der Wiel & Co., Arnhem 1949):  that DDT poisoning often causes polio-like physiology.   Coincidence?  What happened in 1983 when DDT was once again allowed in US use?  - click on the chart to enlarge.

pol_allpicture-54

Major increase in polio cases in what is called the "post-polio" era since this epidemic in the 80s occurred in previous polio patients who should have been "immune" but were re-infected due to environmental exposure.  So, did the polio vaccine result in the dramatic recovery from the 1945 polio epidemic?  Or, was that the phase out of harmful pesticides like DDT?

(2) Polio was a horrible epidemic of nature

This brings us to point #2.  One doctor, Dr. Morton Biskind postulated in the 50s that the increase in "polio-like" illnesses were due to DDT poisoning and not the polio virus (virus X).  A virus of course can not be caused by an environmental substance (contrary to what your mother told you - you can NOT get a cold (virus) from not wearing a hat!).  If all the polio cases were caused by the polio virus then DDT couldn't be causing it.  However, people were rarely tested for the polio virus because only virus-polio would be covered financially so cases were diagnosed by symptoms (clinical diagnosis) and not lab diagnosis.  It is probable that President Roosevelt did not have polio but an immune disorder called Guillain-Barre (a notorious vaccine side effect).   Historically, the polio virus was very benign dating back to ancient Egypt.  The 20th century brought the first ever epidemics of the disease.

But, the mortality rate of polio is atrocious, right?  According to the CDC Pink Book more than 95% of all polio cases are asymptotic - you wouldn't even know you have it.  4-8% have general flu-like symptoms that last one week with complete recovery.  1-2% experience neck and back stiffness and recover completely in 7-10 days.  Less than 1% experience asymmetrical paralysis lasting days to weeks with full recovery.  Of this 1% most make a full recovery, some will remain paralyzed and 2-5% will die.  That's 2-5% of the 1% that have paralytic polio and do not recover fully.  This means that 99.5% of all people with viral polio will make a full recovery, with 95% being asymptotic.  Hardly "polio paralyzes you."  And remember these numbers are based on historical morbidity and mortality which includes the high incidence epidemics of the 20th century that may not have been viral polio at all but similar symptoms caused by pesticide poisoning.

The graphs used so far are pulled from a very detailed explanation on this site.  If you want more information please check it out.  I haven't even touched on the effects of contamination involving a monkey virus called SV40 that infected polio vaccines.  Read about it here.

The CDC recommends the first polio vaccine for this horrible, deadly disease for infants of only 8 weeks old. It contains 3 types of 'inactivated' polio viruses, neomycin, streptomycin, and polymyxin B, formaldehyde, and 2-phenoxyethanol, and a continuous line of monkey kidney cells.  Side effects, as reported by the manufacturer include:

Erythema, induration and pain occurred in 3.2%, 1% and 13%, respectively, of vaccinees within 48 hours post-vaccination. Temperatures of ≥ 39°C (≥ 102°F) were reported in 38% of vaccinees. Other symptoms included irritability, sleepiness, fussiness, and crying ...  Although no causal relationship has been established, deaths have occurred in temporal association after vaccination of infants with IPV.37

Foray Into Homeopathy

***Canyonlands NP in Utah is the most beautiful place on Earth.  Take a minute to tell our leaders we don't want oil companies plundering this land!***

I've always been intrigued by homeopathic medicine.  My doctor growing up was open minded enough to offer homeopathic remedies from time to time  (he also wrote a bible verse on a prescription pad for my dad, lol).  I've been reading about homeopathic remedies for children since studies show that cold meds are terrible for them.  Well I've been researching homeopathy for gestational diabetes and I think I'm going to try chromium supplementation.  Mainstream medicine doesn't spend much time on homeopathic remedies but I did find this great study about chromium for GD.

My numbers have actually been great.  Fasting numbers in the mid 80s, most post-meal numbers between 95-110.  I just DO NOT want to need insulin since I'm sure that would bump me to the OBs.

We are scheduled for a ultrasound on Monday and meeting with the OB and then our midwife.  I'm going to ask some pointed questions about reducing interventions in spite of the GD.  I really want to only intervene if evidence exists of a problem.  Sometimes to "err on the side of caution" GD mothers are induced or even scheduled for a c-section.  I would do those things but only if there is an identifiable problem with the baby.  I also don't want electronic fetal monitoring during labor unless absolutely necessary since this will keep me out of the labor pool and tied to the bed.

We also have an appointment with a pediatrician Monday morning.  I got a recommendation from the ladies at Mothering.com message boards (aka "crunchy" mama land) to try Dr. Lavin at Advanced Pediatrics for a no-vax friendly doc.  I was excited to see that "In order to provide our patients the best uninfluenced information that science has to offer, we do not accept samples of drugs, advertising tchotchkes, money, food, or any item from outside vendors."  I'm really hopeful that he will make a great choice for us (even if he is 45 minutes away).  It will certainly be a relief to have that out of the way!

Oh by the way, I'm 31 FREAKING WEEKS PREGNANT!  Holy crap!  I can't believe it!!!  It is downright surreal.  It definitely feels like it is going fast now.  SOOOO much to do!  Being on bed rest the house is a mess.  I hope that "nesting instinct" kicks in soon!  Right now my "getting as much sleep as possible" instinct has taken over!

Orgasmic Birth will air on ABC's 20/20 December 12 at 10:00 PM EST (that is this Friday).

Hairy Monster

"Pregnancy Glow" my a$$!

I think pregnancy glow is a huge societal lie we've all agreed to believe.  I'm glowing all right - my overly greasy skin shines like a vegas hotel room.

Pregnancy is oily, pimply, farty, burpy, and...HAIRY!  Not only is the hair on my head growing at lightning speed but it is growing elsewhere.  I've always been really lucky with sparse and blonde body hair.  I can get away with not shaving my legs way longer than my darker, courser haired friends.  Not anymore.  I have weird hair elsewhere also.  My linea nigra I was so happy about - it is now highlighted by what can only be called a "happy trial."  Several dozen hairs - dark hairs! - in a line from my belly button to my nethers.  Ugh.  Ok, how about this bizarre (but fortunately blonde) 4-5 inch hair growing out the side of my neck!  And the freckles!  Lots of extra ones.  And red ones - called cherry angiomas - all over.  At least I think I can make out the red freckles from the pimples!

Glow on!

Vaccinations: The Butterfly Effect

The butterfly effect is part of chaos theory that postulates that in complex systems the smallest variation can have profound effects.  It gets its name from the philosophical example that "a butterfly flaps its wing in the Amazon and there is a tornado in Kansas."  It is about unintended consequences.

Let's look at an example of human intervention that had unintended consequences.  In Scotland, potatoes were genetically modified with a pesticide gene that killed the aphids that destroyed the potatoes.  Ladybugs, nature's aphid predators, ate the aphids that didn't die after eating the modified potaotes and themselves died.  This led to decrease potato crops due to the loss of the natural balance in the system.

This example brings up another problem with vaccines.  Unintended consequences.  For this post I'm going to use the chicken pox (varicella) vaccine as an example but there are many more unintended consequences in vaccine research.

For me, my resistance to vaccination began with the chicken pox vaccine and not the more recent worries about autism.  I remember thinking, long before I was thinking of having kids, "why are they vaccinating against a disease with such a low mortality rate?"  And it was a good question.  According to the CDC:  among infants less than 1 year old who get the disease, about 1 in 250,000 die. For older children, about 1 in 100,000 die. It is also noted that these are mostly in immunocompromised people.  Just to do the math that means your infant has a 0.000399% chance of death from varicella and older children .001%.  Over 99.9% of children who get chicken pox recover.

But it is worse in adults, right?  Let's vaccinate the kids so adults don't die.  That's how the normal argument goes.  So, let's see how that works out.  When I had chicken pox I was 9(ish).  It sucked, I recovered.  My mom had it when she was a kid.  She was re-exposed to it when my sister and I had it.  This provided her body with a natural "boost" to her immunity.  It is like her body got the virus from us and said "oh I remember this and can beat it."  Chicken pox infection does not give lifetime immunity - it gets boosted by repeated exposure to the virus.  Shingles, a serious illness caused by the same virus occured (pre-vaccination) almost exclusively in people over 60 because they have passed the time in their lives of constant exposure to kids with chicken pox and often have complicating underlying conditions.  Since the varicella vaccine was introduced the rate of adult shingles has not only increased 90% but it has crept down the age ladder to effect people 40-60 years old.

“Our immunity is stimulated by being exposed to the Chicken Pox. When that stimulation goes away, our protection is going to decrease. So we’ll see more cases of Shingles. My guess is that we’re going to be giving doses of the [varicella] vaccine to 30 and 40 year olds to prevent Shingles. The better we do, [eradicating chickenpox], the more we’re going to see Shingles.”    Dr. Cherry.

We are tipping the balance.  We are killing aphids (chicken pox) and it is killing the ladybugs (our natural acquired immunity) and resulting in decreased crop production (increased disease in society as a whole as well as a more deadly disease, shingles - 3x more death 5x more hospitalization with singles as opposed to chicken pox.).  The Butterfly Effect.

So what are we doing about it?  Rethinking the mandatory chicken pox vaccine?  Nope.  We are developing an adult shingles vaccine.  A vaccine to treat a problem primarily caused by a vaccine.  Now why would we do that?  What possible force could cause people to think that the logical plan is to keep on vaccinating?

I'll give you a hint...

In case you are thinking that this is all worth catching that .001% of dead kids - Don't be fooled.  The chicken pox vaccine is one of the least effective vaccines in use.  In 15-20% of cases the vaccine doesn't even "take" and patients get chicken pox anyways.  And, since this is a live virus vaccination - getting chicken pox is one of the side effect reported in 2% of cases.  Even when it does "take" it lasts at a maximum of 8-10 years leaving people vulnerable in adulthood when chicken pox is much more dangerous.

I have to tell you, of all the vaccine's I've researched - this one takes the Stupidest Idea Ever Prize.  I can find zero literature that provides a case for this vaccine that is remotely strong enough to make me consider it for myself let alone a 12 month old baby.

SIDE EFFECTS OF VARICELLA VACCINE:

Oh and 1 more thing:

There is a chicken pox immunoglobulin treatment!

This means if you are high risk - imunosupressed for example - you can go get an injection of varicella antibodies within 96 hours of exposure.  This temporary immunity lasts up to 3 weeks.

I think a tornado just sprung up in Kansas.

Stress

First, I had to cry at this story of a healthy little boy that died just 10 days after getting the MMR vaccination.

I am officially on bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy.  After 4 weeks of limited activity and treatment there has been no improvement in my symptoms.  Well, Friday evening my boss called me and wanted my doctor to call the on-site doctor to review my case.  What??  I didn't even know what to say.  Is that legal?  Why?  She mentioned that my previous notes had been vague.  I agree they were very brief slips about my condition.  But why not ask for a more detailed letter?  Why require a second opinion.  This guy isn't even working in the obstretical field.  What does he know about pregnancy complications?  What about my right to privacy for my medical records?  Needless to say my stress level has been through the roof all weekend.  I'm trying really hard to relax since I can't do anything about it until Monday.  I know it will all work out.  My biggest problem is I never know what my boss' issue is.  Maybe she is just worried about my working from home when I should be resting...she may be concerned about ME but the thing is I never know.  She is extremely diplomatic and...cautious in her wording.  It is nice sometimes and other times it is just confusing.

Vaccinations: Reasonable Doubt

I'm going to start posting about my research findings and thoughts about childhood vaccinations.  I would like to go through each vaccine but in today's post I want to look at what my overall feeling is regarding what's wrong with vaccination in our country.

So, let me start off with the "American Justice System." Our system is based on may ancient forms of civil law dating from the early greeks and romans.  This system is often called Napoleonic Justice.  This refers to the post-revolutionary war changes to the French system of laws.  It is where we get due process, the right for laws to be publicly available, and "innocent until proven guilty."  This last point is called Presumption of Innocence and it is the backbone of our judicial system and, in my opinion, any free society.  Presumption of Innocence means that the burden of proof rests on the prosecution (the accuser) to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the charge being brought is correct.  The burden is not on the accused.  They are given the benefit of the doubt.

So, what does this mean?  I remember when the first OJ Simpson trial verdict of not guilty came down.  I was in college at the time so naturally this was a great area for debate. There were so many people incensed on both sides and it was often divided by racial lines.  Most people were led by their emotions.  "I think he did it" and thus I'm upset he "got off" vs. "I think he didn't do it" so thank goodness "justice worked."  People didn't look at the justice system and how it worked.  Regardless of wether you think he did it or even if he did do it - did the justice system do its job?  In my opinion, yes.  The prosecution (the accuser) did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he (the accused) did it.

So what if he did do it?  Did a guilty man go free?  Maybe.  But our justice system prefers this.  Presumption of Innocence assumes that we would rather see an occasional guilty man go free than infringe on the rights of a free man by imprisoning him unjustly.  If you happen to feel that OJ was guilty this stings.  But do you think it is important to the justice system of a free society?  I certainly do.  When the government (prosecutors/accusers) have the upper-hand, how is that a free society.

So, you ask, what the heck does this have to do with vaccinations?  Hang with me a sec, you know i"m long winded ;).

When I do research on the vaccination debate I am concerned at where the burden of proof is placed.  For example, does the MMR vaccine cause autism?  The research that has been done that indicates yes (Wakefield,et.al.) is small, non-random, non-controlled trials.  In science speak that means that it is not conclusive as proof.  The research that has been done that indicates "no" is epidemiology studies.  Epidemiological studies are large surveys of population and occurrence of an event. They find causal nature, meaning they can find (but not prove) a cause/effect relationship between two events (aka MMR vaccination vs. autism diagnosis) in a large population.  These studies did NOT find a causal relationship between MMR vaccination and subsequent autism symptoms.  Does that mean beyond a reasonable doubt that MMR does not cause autism?

Casual relationships are subjective measures.  There has been found to be a causal relationship between violence on TV and violence amongst children.  This does not mean that a particular child who watches a violent movie will go out and do a violent act.  It means that given a large population of children increased violence on TV relates to a higher incidence of violent behavior.  See the difference?

I'm not implying that epidemiology studies are invalid - they are very valuable.  However they can't prove a cause or lack of cause.  Actual scientific research - laboratory investigation of disease agents - can help us find definitive answers (some of this research is going on now).  So, don't ever let someone tell you "they proved that MMR doesn't cause autism."

This brings me to my second major gripe.  The way medical researchers treat "antecdotal evidence" from parents.  Parents often are adamant that their child was using x number of words, smiling, interacting..and then got an MMR shot and within a week regressed in their forms of communication and became non-interactive.  They say "his soul was gone."  This is treated as completely emotional bunk by researchers.  I find this appalling.  Of course emotions will be involved in a parent-child relationship but does that mean parents are incapable of noticing factual changes in their child?  Anecdotal evidence is scientific evidence.  Like eye witness reports in court.  Are they infallible?  NO.  Are they dismissed as irrelevant? Definitely not.

So, here is where I'm going with this.  If Mother A says her son got autism from the MMR vaccine and researchers say "our epidemiology study says no" - where is the burden of proof there?  Aren't we putting the burden of proof on that Mother to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that MMR did in fact cause her son's autism?  Does this seem like the right place for this burden?  In a free society where the liberty of the individual to be innocent until proven guilty is important, should the child or the vaccine be given the benefit of the doubt?  Should Mom have to prove that MMR is unsafe or should MMR have to prove it is safe?  If this were the case we would put drugs directly on the market and say "prove this hurts you" instead of trying to prove it is safe before release (note: not that this works - see Vioxx).  The burden is on the drug to prove its safety not on the public to prove its harm.

I'm sure you can see where I come down on this issue.  Science is not infallible.  Mistakes are made - read And the Band Played On about the AIDS epidemic.  It was ignored for years before it was admitted to be an epidemic.

We *knew* beyond a reasonable doubt the world was flat.

We *knew* beyond a reasonable doubt that DDT was safe to spray on crops.

We *know* beyond a reasonable doubt that growth hormones in dairy are ok for human consumption.

We *know* beyond a reasonable doubt that vaccines are safe.

What will we know tomorrow beyond a reasonable doubt?
